Liverpool allow players to return to Melwood

Liverpool’s players have been allowed to start individual training at Melwood.

Anfield chiefs reopened the club’s first-team base on Thursday as the Premier League plans to restart once coronavirus lockdown restrictions are relaxed.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have not visited their main workplace since the pandemic forced the English top flight to postpone its remaining games on March 13.

Instead they have maintained fitness levels from home using tailor-made exercise programmes and taking part in group yoga sessions via video link.

In line with the new government guidelines, three Reds players will be allowed to train on-site at Melwood using one pitch each for up to an hour.

None of the club’s coaching staff will be present for the sessions at the West Derby facility, which will be monitored by one member of the medical team.

Other facilities within the complex and its main building are set to remain off-limits to the European champions’ squad during their allotted training times.

The Premier League is expected to allow clubs to start group training again from May 18 with the 2019/20 season potentially resuming in mid-June.
