Leipzig address Liverpool’s Werner interest

RB Leipzig have not received any approach from Liverpool for Timo Werner.

Werner’s long-term future remains the subject of intense speculation amid revelations that he has a £52 million release clause with the Bundesliga outfit.

Both the Reds and Bayern Munich are said to be leading the chase for the highly-rated Germany international ahead of the transfer window reopening.

Jurgen Klopp’s side previously landed Naby Keita from Leipzig for a similar fee and are expected to also join the hunt for the 24-year-old striker’s signature.

But the club’s CEO Oliver Mintzlaff has shot down claims that representatives from either Bayern or Liverpool have sounded them out over Werner.

“Neither Jurgen Klopp nor (Bayern chief executive) Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has contacted me,” he told General-Anzeiger Bonn.

“First and foremost, we are happy that we managed to extend his contract until 2023.

“We continue to believe that we remain a very good place for Timo Werner to develop as a German international.”

Werner has previously spoken glowingly of Liverpool, telling Viasport in February that he was ‘very proud’ of being linked with the club.
