Liverpool given Oxlade-Chamberlain injury scare

Liverpool will assess Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain after an injury scare on his comeback.

Oxlade-Chamberlain made a long-awaited return to competitive action as the Reds’ under-23 side ran out 3-1 winners over Derby County on Friday afternoon.

But the midfielder’s scheduled 45-minute run-out was cut short as he was withdrawn four minutes from the half-time interval as a precaution.

Minutes earlier, Oxlade-Chamberlain had been holding his right hamstring which prompted Liverpool’s coaching staff to take the decision to substitute him.

The England international had not played since sustaining a cruciate knee ligament injury in his side’s Champions League win over Roma, 11 months ago.

He was still able to sign autographs and pose for photos with supporters watching the game, insisting that he was ‘all good’ despite the early withdrawal.

‘He obviously had a bit of an issue but hopefully it’s nothing major,” said Liverpool U23 manager Neil Critchley.

“The bonus for him is that it’s not his knee, so he’s delighted there are no problems with that.

“He was enjoying himself, he was happy to be back playing. Hopefully when he wakes up in the morning, fingers crossed it’s nothing and only a precaution.

“The idea was only ever to play him for 45 minutes at most anyway. He nearly got that, as well. Hopefully it’s not as bad as it first looked.”

He added: “He was looking over (to the bench) and we weren’t sure. It’s maybe some kind of muscle problem and maybe one to assess tomorrow.

“What was good is that he was sensible. He came off quite quick. He has handled that situation quite well.”
