Liverpool have been drawn against Everton in the FA Cup’s third round.
Jurgen Klopp’s side will renew acquaintances with the Blues in a 230th Merseyside derby which comes just weeks after Sunday’s Anfield showdown.
The last time the teams faced off in the world’s most famous cup competition was decided by a late Andy Carroll goal in the 2012 semi-final at Wembley.
Prior to that, Dan Gosling’s strike in the dying seconds of extra time tipped the balance in the Blues’ favour in a fourth round replay at Goodison Park in 2009.
They have contested a total of 23 FA Cup ties, including two finals, with the Anfield side edging out the overall contest with 10 victories.
Kenny Dalglish famously resigned as Liverpool manager in February 1991 following a 4-4 draw with Everton in a fifth round replay at Goodison.
Sam Allardyce is set to take charge of his first derby encounter as the Toffees’ new manager in this weekend’s clash between the teams.
Klopp has maintained his side’s upper hand, guiding the Reds to three successive Premier League victories since taking the helm in 2015.
Sammy Lee, meanwhile, insists that he had no concerns about becoming Allardyce’s assistant at Goodison despite his long-standing Liverpool connection.
Lee worked with Allardyce during his previous spells with Bolton, England and Crystal Palace but is synonymous for his spells as a player and coach at Anfield.
However the 58-year-old, who was left his boyhood club in 2011 during Dalglish’s reign, has dismissed suggestions of split loyalties in his new role at Everton.
He said: “This is a fantastic football club and people know my history, people know my affiliation to Liverpool.
“But I’m also affiliated to Liverpool as a city and I think for me to be given the opportunity to work here at Everton, it’s an honour and a pleasure.
“It’s a global football club and nobody needs to be educated [on that] wherever they are.
“People know about Everton Football Club, people know about the history here.
“People know about the quality here, and you just have to walk around the building [at Finch Farm] to see the plans they have put in here to make sure the future is bright going forward.
“It’s a big challenge, it’s certainly one I’m looking forward to and I’ll be doing my utmost to get the best out of this football club.”
