It proved to be one of the greatest Merseyside derbies in living memory.
No one could have predicted the shocks that accompanied the eight-goal thriller that was Liverpool’s FA Cup fifth round replay with Everton on this day in 1991.
Peter Beardsley put the Reds ahead twice at Goodison Park, only for Graeme Sharp to pull the hosts level on each occasion, either side of the interval.
Ian Rush thought he had won it as Liverpool held the lead for almost half of the second 45 but a late equaliser by Tony Cottee sent the tie into extra time.
More drama followed during the additional time played with a sumptuous John Barnes strike that was again cancelled out by Cottee just 10 minutes later.
Two days later, there was a further twist in the tale as Kenny Dalglish announced his shock resignation as Liverpool manager.
Everton would go onto win 1-0 in the second replay just five days later.
