Liverpool FC chief involved in Premier League showdown

Liverpool owner John W Henry was involved in private showdown talks with the Premier League last month.

The figurehead of Fenway Sports Group, who have owned the Reds since 2010, was part of a group of top-flight owners which met with Richard Scudamore in New York.

Henry was joined by several of his counterparts, including Manchester United owners the Glazer family, Arsenal chief Stan Kroenke and Tottenham backer Joe Lewis.

According to the Daily Mail, the six-club delegation met with Premier League chief Scudamore following tensions over a proposed TV rights deal with China.

Staff from the ‘Big Six’ of Liverpool, United, Manchester City, Arsenal, Spurs and Chelsea allegedly huddled together at the last league meeting before approving the offer.

‘The US meeting was to pick their brains about US sports and whether there was anything we could learn,” a Premier League spokesman confirmed.

“It was referenced at a previous club meeting.”

But the news has been met with disapproval from the league’s other member clubs, who claim that they were not made aware nor notified of the Manhattan meeting.
