Williams completes loan move to Stoke City

Everton defender Ashley Williams has joined Stoke City on a season-long loan.

Williams made 73 appearances for the Blues following his arrival from Swansea City in summer 2016 but is unlikely to play again for the club.

The Wales international has entered the final 12 months of his current deal at Goodison Park and is not expected to feature in Marco Silva’s long-term plans.

He will be available on a free transfer when his spell at the Bet365 Stadium ends, having fallen down the pecking order at Everton over the past season.

Williams, 33, will provide competition for places in Stoke’s defence ahead of their Championship opener with Leeds United this weekend.

He said: “I’ve played a few games for Everton and done a full pre-season so I’m probably as fit as everyone else at this stage.

“I haven’t spoken to the manager about timescales or anything like that.

“For me it’s just about getting back into the training sessions here and then seeing how I am.

“Stoke have probably been back a week longer than me but I feel fine and I’m really enthusiastic about getting involved.”
