Stekelenburg signs up for extended Everton stay

Maarten Stekelenburg has committed his future to Everton for another two years.

Stekelenburg moved to Goodison Park in 2016 as Ronald Koeman’s first signings and regularly vied with Joel Robles for the Blues’ number-one spot.

The Holland international, 35, found himself overshadowed by new arrival Jordan Pickford, who went on to be named Everton’s multiple Player of the Season.

But Stekelenburg, whose new deal expires in June 2020, admits he is relishing helping push the England stopper to continue his improvement.

“Jordan had a very good 2017-18 season and played superbly as well for England at the World Cup,” he told evertontv.

“I understand my role and I will try to compete with Jordan and push him to continue to get better as well.

“For me, it was tough last year because I had an injury and it took me a few months to come back from that.

“But I’m fit now, I’ve played in our pre-season games and I’m very much looking forward to Jordan getting back here so we can push one another.”
