DC United ‘hopeful’ of Rooney signing

DC United are hopeful of tying up a deal for Everton’s Wayne Rooney.

Rooney visited the Washington-based club last Thursday in a fact-finding trip as he mulls over whether to quit Goodison Park this summer.

A proposed transfer could see the Blues net around £12 million from the sale of the former England captain, who is midway through a two-year contract.

The MLS outfit’s head coach Ben Olsen admits that they have high hopes of convincing Rooney to move Stateside but are not taking anything for granted.

He said: “There is interest in Wayne Rooney from our end and I think there is interest from his end too.

“I hope it can get over the line because he’s a very good player who can help us. He would be a great player for this league.

“Nothing is done, so I don’t want to get into talk of arrival until he actually arrives.

“Nothing is ever done in this world and when you’re looking at a deal of this scope and size.

“We’ll see, but hopefully we can get it done.”
