Three Merseyside men are the first to be jailed for nationwide rioting.
Right-wing protestors took to the streets following the murders of Southport schoolchildren Bebe King, Elsie Dot Stancombe and Alice da Silva Aguiar.
Derek Drummond, 58, received a three-year prison sentence for punching a police officer during violent scenes in Southport the day after their deaths.
Declan Geiran, 29, was jailed for two years and five months for attempting to set fire to a police vehicle amid last weekend’s unrest in Liverpool city centre.
Liam Riley, 41, has also been sentenced to time behind bars for throwing rocks and bricks at officers at the junction of Whitechapel and Church Street.
Wednesday’s convictions at Liverpool Crown Court are the first to have taken place since the UK-wide rioting and violence throughout the previous week.
Speaking after the rulings, senior district crown prosecutor Johnathan Egan said: “The three men sentenced today are the tip of the iceberg, and just the start of what will be a very painful process for many who foolishly chose to involve themselves in violent unrest.
“Many of those involved will be sent to prison for a long time Let today’s result serve as a warning to all those who carry out criminality on our streets: you will always suffer the consequences.”
