Suspected grenade found in Wavertree

A suspected grenade brought a busy Liverpool road to a standstill.

Emergency services attended Stevenson Street in Wavertree at 8.10am on Wednesday after reports a potential device had been found in a property.

Picton Road was cordoned off from Rathbone Street to Taunton Street while explosive disposal experts confirmed the status of the discovered item.

A number of homes in the local area were also evacuated as a precaution.

Merseyside Police have now confirmed that the road closure has been lifted after the grenade was discovered to be a replica and successfully removed

“We can confirm that a replica grenade has been removed from a property in Wavertree this morning,” read a force statement.

“Emergency services attended the scene on Stevenson Street at around 8.10am following reports that a suspected grenade had been found inside a property.

“The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team attended and confirmed that the item was a replica and it has now been removed.

“A police cordon has now been lifted. Thank you to members of the public, residents and business owners for your patience while we dealt with this incident.”

A 60-year-old local man was later arrested on suspicion of possessing controlled Class A and B drugs and possession of an offensive weapon.

Stephen Morgan, of Stevenson Street, has since been charged with three counts of possessing an offensive weapon in a private place, acquire/use/possess criminal property, possess with intent to supply Class A drugs (heroin) and possession of a Class B drug (cannabis).

He was remanded into custody to appear at Wirral Adult Remand Court on Thursday.
