Rotheram wins third term as Metro Mayor

Steve Rotheram has been re-elected Liverpool City Region’s Metro Mayor.

Mayor Rotheram first held the position as head of the region’s combined authority when it was launched in 2017 before winning a fresh term in 2021.

The 62-year-old secured re-election with Saturday’s outcome of the local election results, which saw him receive 183,932 of the 272,721 votes cast.

That figure is approximately a 10% increase on his previous win, with his closet challenger Conservative candidate Jade Marsden earning 27,708.

Tom Crone from the Green Party finished third with a total of 26,417 votes.

In his re-election speech, Mayor Rotheram hit out the Tory government’s rollout of ‘regressive’ laws around voter ID for the latest local elections.

He said: “To those who were unable to have their voices heard because of the Government’s regressive ID laws, I understand your disappointment,

“I met many people on the doorstep who couldn’t vote and I think its wrong to deny a single person their democratic right to vote.

“But today the people in our area have not only spoken, they’ve hollered at the top of their voices, with two simple and clear messages:

“To the Government, enough is enough, and locally, Labour is delivering in power.”
