Man fighting for life after city centre attack

A man has been arrested after an attack in Liverpool city centre.

Police received reports that a man in his 30s had been assaulted on Temple Street at around 9pm on Tuesday in which he had sustained a significant head injury.

Emergency services attended the scene and the victim was taken to hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

A 30-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of section 18 assault and he remains in police custody.

One other male reportedly fled the scene on foot in the direction of Victoria Street and inquiries are ongoing to locate him.

Detectives believes that the assault is connected to an earlier disturbance involving three men at The Poste House bar on Cumberland Street.

Several police cordons are currently in place in the city centre, including Temple Street and Cumberland Street.

An investigation is underway and officers remain in the area to carry out CCTV, witness and forensic enquiries.

Detective Inspector Kev O’Rourke said: “This was a vicious assault that has sadly left a man in hospital in a critical condition.

“Several police cordons remain in place and officers are in the area to speak to potential witnesses and carry out CCTV inquiries.
