Taxis to charge extra for Liverpool drop-off

Taxi passengers travelling to Liverpool from Wirral will face an added tariff.

The additional charge is set to take effect with hackney carriage drivers taking fares into the city which the Unite union claim is due to rising insurance and tyre costs.

Wirral Council’s regulatory and general purposes committee has approved the planned change but it is subject to a 14-day public consultation period.

If enforced, it will see a further 20p for every 175 yards after the current day rate of £3.60 per the first 300 yards, which will remain unchanged.

Nightly tariffs will also increase by 7% per mile and 20% for 10 miles.

Bank holidays are set to be priced at a lower rate for five miles or more but Christmas Day and New Year will cost £9.30 and £47.70 for one and 10 miles.

They will see the highest fares in the Liverpool City Region with a £5 added to any fare dropping off in Liverpool in addition to the respective tunnel fees.

Gary Gregory from Unite, who are representing 85 drivers, said: “If the traffic’s bad, it can take an hour to get back.

“We can’t work in Liverpool, we can’t pick anybody else up so that’s been factored in to pay for that lost time.

“There has to be something because the fares are non-economical, they’re not viable to do.

“You get £16 for the fare, you take £4 for the tunnel leaves you £12 and you’re working for an hour and a half.

“That’s not even minimum wage.”

Mr Gregory also claimed that the Strand will become a ‘no-go area’ for cabbies when Everton’s new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock is opened.

He added: “You can’t expect the taxi driver to sit for two hours waiting to get back to where you can pick up legally and not be compensated.”
