Labour has retained its control of councils in four Liverpool City Regions.
Thursday’s local elections saw a divergent process with Liverpool divided up into 64 new wards to replace the 30 in which the area was previously divided.
The change in voting led to something of a delayed count, with some results being announced after 5pm on Friday, as Labour maintained its power base.
Only the new Festival Gardens ward saw the party facing any fresh challenge as a recount was required before Peter Norris took the seat by a single vote.
Labour won 61 of the 85 seats with the Liberal Democrats taking 15 and three apiece going to the Green Party, Liverpool Community Independents and the Liberal Party.
The Greens also made gains elsewhere in the region by taking two seats in Knowsley, a Labour stronghold dating back to the ward’s 1970s inception.
Wirral remains under no overall control as Labour missed out on sealing a majority despite making gains in Sefton, taking 51 of the area’s 66 seats.
Halton saw the Conservatives lose one seat to their direct opponents, who now have 49 of the Cheshire borough’s 54 representatives.
