Liverpool star heads up New Year’s Honours

Andy Robertson is one of many Merseyside representatives to be recognised the New Year’s Honours list.

Liverpool full-back Robertson will be awarded an MBE for his contributions to football as well as through his personal charity in his native Scotland.

The AR26 Charity aims to provide young people with an equal start to life, including mentoring youngsters seeking opportunities in employment.

Also recognised in King Charles’ first New Year’s Honours list was Liverpool-born actor Stephen Graham, who was given an OBE for service to drama.

Elaine Clarke, who founded trailblazing Liverpool night spot Baa Bar, was another to receive an OBE for her services to the hospitality industry.

Gee Walker was awarded an MBE for her services to diversity and racial injustice in the wake of her son Anthony’s brutal murder in summer 2005.

Since the 18-year-old’s killing, Dr Walker has set up the Anthony Walker Foundation, which is devoted to combatting racism and tackling prejudice.

Around 40,000 young people have worked with the charity during the past five years while nearly 10,000 victims of abuse have also been helped.

Merseyside bus driver Neil Atherton received a British Empire Medal for public transport service in Liverpool and Widnes during the Covid-19 pandemic.

He also walked 105 miles this year to raise money for people struggling with the cost of living crisis.
