Jacob’s Merseyside staff seal improved pay deal

Workers at Jacob’s Merseyside factory have accepted a new pay deal.

More than 750 staff from the cracker and biscuit production facility in Aintree took part in 11 weeks of strikes over a dispute over wage increase proposals.

Workers commenced industrial action in response to an offer of less than four per cent put forward by Jacob’s parent company Pladis prior to the walkout.

But an improved offer will now see staff receive a 6.5% rise with a one-off payment of £500 this year and an additional 3% rise and £250 next year.

Lisa Ryan, GMB Organiser, said: “These workers have stuck together – and secured a decent pay offer through their commitment.

“They needed something to help them during the cost of living crisis. We’re glad the company have finally listened to their hard pressed staff.

“Every penny earned here is down to these workers. All they wanted was their fair share.”

A Pladis spokesperson added: “We are pleased to have reached an agreement with the GMB and its members at our Aintree bakery.

“This is a positive step forward as we can continue delivering for our customers and baking the great British products that our consumers know and love.”

Aintree has been home to Jacob’s factory for more than a century and was the company’s first to be built in England.
