Liverpool bids farewell to singer Gerry Marsden

Liverpool has paid its last respects to Merseybeat icon Gerry Marsden.

Hundreds of people attended a memorial service on Friday to the late frontman of Gerry and the Pacemakers, who died in January 2021 aged 78.

Covid-19 restrictions meant that Marsden’s funeral had been a small private affair prior to the celebration of his life inside the city’s Anglican Cathedral.

Liverpool legends Sir Kenny Dalglish and Jamie Carragher joined crowds to commemorate the Toxteth-born singer and songwriter at the service.

Former boxing champion John Conteh and the Metro Mayors of Liverpool and Manchester, Steve Rotheram and Andy Burnham, were also in attendance.

Several high-profile performers including Sir Cliff Richard and Gloria Estafan sent video messages with their own memories of Marsden throughout his life.

“So sad that we lose people far too soon,” said Sir Cliff.

“We will miss him greatly. He was a great singer, a great entertainer, a great husband.”

Marsden’s home city has since renamed its ferry terminal at the Pier Head in its name while plans for a statue on the waterfront are still being discussed.
