Arson arrest following Ofiveone building blaze

A man has been arrested after a fire broke out in Liverpool city centre.

Police saw smoke emanating from a building on Brownlow Hill that used to house the Smokie Mo’s bar and Ofiveone nightclub at 1.40am on Monday.

More than 60 firefighters spent over five hours tackling the blaze at the disused four-storey premises, which is situated close to the Adelphi Hotel.

A 22-year-old man of no fixed abode was detained close to the scene on suspicion of arson and has been taken into custody for questioning.

Brownlow Hill in both directions is closed between Renshaw Street and Clarence Street while a section of Mount Pleasant is also inaccessible.

Police are advising motorists to avoid Renshaw Street and Hawke Street.
