World Heritage warning to new Everton stadium

Everton’s new stadium must benefit Liverpool’s World Heritage status before it is given planning permission.

A new purpose-built venue at the Bramley-Moore Dock is set to be completed by summer 2022 with Liverpool City Council operating as its funding vehicle.

However the development in the north docks could also coincide with the city being stripped of its status as a UNESCO-approved World Heritage site.

Liverpool has been on the list of worldwide locations ‘in danger’ of being removed since 2012 amid concerns over Peel’s seismic Liverpool Waters plans.

The £5.5 billion redevelopment is in the designated World Heritage zone and would mean that both it and the Bramley-Moore site would need to be ratified by Unesco.

According to the Liverpool Echo, a document set to be approved by the council’s cabinet next week will outline the need for the new stadium to maintain its World Heritage status.

Everton have pledged to ‘work with heritage groups’ including Historic England as part of their core principles for the proposed move from Goodison Park.

A mission statement from the Toffees vowed to ‘ensure that our development is sensitive to the history and significance of the site’ at Bramley-Moore.
