Motorists have made fresh calls for tolls on the Mersey tunnels to be scrapped.
The Government confirmed this week that drivers on the Severn bridges will not have to pay to cross between England and Wales from the end of next year.
Liverpool City Region’s Combined Authority froze the current price of tolls for motorists travelling between the Wirral and Liverpool to a maximum of £1.70.
But Mersey Tunnels Users Association secretary John McGoldrick believes the changes on the Severn route will strengthen the case for similar tariffs to be abolished locally.
He said: “It’s a scandal that all governments, despite promises that they would do something about the Mersey tunnel tolls, have allowed Merseytravel and the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority to rip-off drivers by using a large slice of the revenue raised by tolls to fund various other schemes.
“We think all tolls are an absolute disaster – they divide the region, they divide the city economy, and they divide family and friends.
“Any tolls which are removed or reduced helps to strengthen our case.
“We hope it will add to the pressure to remove the tolls from this area, or substantially reduce them to stop the local authority from making a profit.”
Steve Rotheram pledged to reduce tolls to £1 if he was elected the city region’s Metro Mayor, which he was in May.
