Tate Liverpool revamp still short of full funding

Tate Liverpool is currently short of funding for its lengthy renovation work.

The modern art museum has been closed since October 2023 as part of plans to transform the space in a refit which was initially due to run for two-and-a-half years.

However bosses at the Albert Dock attraction confirmed in February 2025 that it would remain closed until 2027 as part of the full refurbishment process.

The project has been funded from a number of sources including the Department fo Culture, Media and Sport as well as the Public Bodies Infrastructure Fund.

But the Liverpool Echo claim that Tate Liverpool have approached the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority for help with securing the remaining £4 million.

A spokesperson for the gallery said they were in ‘active discussion’ with several potential funders with 90% of the project already accounted for financially.

They added: “As we have announced, the transformed Tate Liverpool will reopen to the public in 2027.

“We will announce the exact reopening date nearer the time, alongside the full programme of special exhibitions, free displays and celebratory events.

“We have already raised over 90% of the project costs, and we are confident of closing that gap in the months ahead.

“The redevelopment of Tate Liverpool will transform the UK’s most popular modern and contemporary art gallery outside London.

“It will be a gallery of international standing, in a historic location, in an iconic world city.”
