A man whose body was found in a burnt out car in Everton has been identified as Joseph McKeever.
Fire services discovered the 54-year-old from Walton in the vehicle in Whitehaven Road last Thursday night.
The cause of death is being withheld pending further investigation but detectives believe he was subject to a sustained assault and suffered a severe head injury.
A man and woman, both aged 31 and from the Bootle area, have been released under investigation to allow for further enquiries to be carried out.
