Two held after man’s body found in burnt out car

Two people have been arrested after a man’s body was found in a burnt out car.

Emergency services were called to Whitehaven Road in Everton at around 11.10pm on Thursday to reports that a vehicle was on fire.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service attended and extinguished the fire before finding the body of a man inside the car.

A post mortem is expected to be carried out on Saturday to establish the cause of death.

Officers are seeking to establish the identity of the deceased, who has not been formally recognised.

The scene where the car was found has been preserved and Crime Scene Investigators are currently carrying out forensic examinations at the scene.

House-to-house enquiries are also being carried out in the surrounding area.

As part of the ongoing investigation scenes have been established in the Bootle and Wavertree areas.

A 31-year-old man from the Bootle area has been arrested on suspicion of murder while a woman, also 31 and from Bootle, has been detained on suspicion of assisting an offender.

Both are currently being questioned by detectives.

Detective Chief Inspector John Middleton said: “Our investigation is in its early stages.

“But I would urge anyone who saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area around Whitehaven Road/Wyre Road around 11pm last night to contact us immediately.

“Any information they have may be vital to our investigation.”
