A games night is a great way to spend an evening in, and especially now the weather is becoming colder. It’s a great idea if you have a family or roommates at home and you’re looking for inspiration about how to spend the best evening in, too. It doesn’t have to be expensive, either, if you already have a good collection of games, but investing in new ones for the occasion won’t be a waste either.
Here are some great hacks for making your games night just right.
Pick a Theme
A theme can make a games night a whole lot more interesting and inventive! It doesn’t have to be a theme relating to the actual games if you’d rather have more freedom about what you play, but you could think of a theme in terms of how guests can dress and how you can set up and decorate your gaming room or home.
This can be great for games nights done on holidays and occasions, too, like a Halloween game night theme or for somebody’s birthday.
Food and Drink is a Must
One thing needed for a successful games’ night is the fuel to keep going, which means the right food, meals and snacks are a must. Think about quick and easy food that won’t interrupt your gaming, either, like pizza or finger food. You don’t want to be wasting quality gaming time trying to prepare a three-course sit-down meal.
Think About Games Perfect for Groups
You could try multiplayer games which are fun as a group, classic board games everybody will love and can play together or activity games like tabletop football which everyone can join in which. That way you can easily switch it around and get everyone involved without having to feel like you have to take turns with two-player games.
Choose the Right Soundtrack
Video games may have a great existing soundtrack, but if you want the right ambience for your night, you may want to compile the right background soundtrack, too. This is also helpful if you’re going to be playing games which aren’t video games, like arcade games or table-top games, so that you can have some background music.
If you’ve picked a theme, you could create a playlist based around that (such as spooky tracks for Halloween) otherwise you can just choose some upbeat tracks to suit the activities you have planned for the evening.
Make Everything Comfortable
Plan ahead for the seating and layout you need for the type of games you’re going to play. You don’t want to risk some guests having nowhere to sit if you’ve miscounted comfortably. For table-top games, make sure you have a good table set up with space to play properly, or make room on the floor instead with floor cushions, too, if you don’t have a big enough table.
You don’t need to make sure that everyone has enough chairs, just at least make sure there’s plenty of room and cushions or soft furnishings which are easy to move around and use for comfort.
Whatever you plan, make sure you choose some of your favourite games and go with the flow!
