After dominating English football for so long, Liverpool were truly left in the cold for the majority of the ‘Premier League era’. Sir Alex Ferguson brought huge success to Old Trafford, but now the tables have turned. Liverpool are at the top of the English game once more.
Liverpool bagged their first league title since 1990 last season, with manager Jurgen Klopp adding the trophy to the famous Champions League title in 2018/19. By comparison, rivals Manchester United are suffering a relative crisis. Without a title since 2013, United have been in decline since Ferguson’s departure. Liverpool fans are loving the contrast in fortunes between them and their arch-rivals.

The rivalry between Liverpool and Manchester United is indeed intense, and you’d be tempted to say the two hate everything about each other, but that isn’t always true. For example, even the most die-hard Liverpool fan would struggle to hate Marcus Rashford. If you take a look at the odds on the BBC sports personality of the year, the Manchester United striker is the favourite to win. Not because of his football, but because of his stance against child food poverty. That is something every football fan can get behind. That aside, there really is no love lost between the two sides.
Luckily for Liverpool fans, the situation seems unlikely to change in the near future. Boasting players like Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mo Salah, and Sadio Mane, Liverpool are one of the best teams in the world at the moment. The Reds are benefiting from their excellent decision to hire one of the most exciting coaches in world football in Klopp. By comparison, Manchester United have one of their former stars in charge. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer might be a club legend, but it is something else entirely to guide a club to global domination.

There is no saying how long Liverpool will enjoy this period of success. After all, a decade ago the two clubs were in totally opposite situations. What Klopp has done in the space of a few years is truly remarkable, but in football everything can change in an instant. What we do know is that Liverpool’s transfer policy gives them every chance of staying on top. Signing Thiago Alcantara for £25m is just one of a number of outstanding purchases made by the club. Salah was bought for £37m in 2017 and must be worth over a £100m in today’s market after his performances.
With one of the best forward lines in the world, Liverpool fans can say that they support a team at the peak of their powers. It would be a huge shock to see Manchester United finish above Liverpool this season, a true sign of how things have changed in the past few years.
