Purchasing a new home is an exciting, and sometimes stressful, experience for many of us. The ups and downs of this experience can often make us long to settle into a place that really feels like home. However, once you’ve got the keys to your new home, and you walk in the front door, it might not seem like your home at all. There can be many reasons for this; perhaps the decor isn’t your style, or maybe there’s a lot of work to do on it. Whatever the reason, follow these simple tips and your new place will be feeling like home in no time.
Mini Makeovers
If you’re not planning on doing much remodelling of your new home, but still want to change a few things, you could try a mini makeover. These small redesigns will allow you to make your home feel more like yours, without spending a huge amount of time on money on building work. Mini makeovers include changing the paint colour scheme, installing internal bifold doors, and having a new carpet put down in one or two rooms. All of these things will spruce up your home, make it feel more to your taste and allow you to get a little creative. Choosing a bolder colour for one wall can add a much needed splash of colour to a room, while adding bifold doors will bring in light and allow you to open up your living space.
Unpack Everything
We all know how difficult it can be to unpack absolutely everything as soon as we move into a new home. Often we take out the essentials and then leave box full of trinkets, photographs and ornaments in the attic for months, if not years. However, these are the things that will really make your new place feel like home, so make it a priority to unpack absolutely everything at the nearest opportunity. Once your pictures are on the walls and your family photographs are on the mantelpiece, the space will feel much more personal to you. One reason that people don’t unpack all of their things in their new home is that they’re afraid of cluttering it up. However, if you’re used to a home that does have a bit of clutter, you’re probably not going to feel as at home in a place that has none. Don’t be afraid to clutter things up a bit at first, you can always tidy it up later, if you want to.
Invite Guests Over
There’s a reason that the house-warming party has become such a strong tradition around the world. Inviting your friends and family over to your new house and enjoying a meal and a few drinks together can really help you to feel more at home. The concept of home isn’t just a material one, after all, it’s also made up of the memories we attach to that place and all of the experiences we’ve had there. Making new memories in a new place will soon help you to feel more comfortable there, especially if your loved ones are there to share the new experience. This can be particularly important if you live alone, as it can be quite strange to move into a new place by yourself. Inviting some people over to celebrate with you will help to put you at ease and associate positive feelings with your new space.
Trick Your Senses
One clever way to make your new place feel more like home is to bring in some of the sensory elements you had in your previous home. This will trick your senses into thinking you are still in the place you originally associate with that smell, colour or sound, allowing you to instantly feel more relaxed and at home. Easy ways of doing this include placing candles from your previous home around your new home, in places that you spend a lot of time, such as next to your bed or on the coffee table. You could also play music that you used to play in your previous home, or put up pictures that you strongly associate with that home. Any strong visual elements that you associate with being home, such as your favourite throw pillows, ornaments or lamps, should be on full display in your new home.
Get Cooking
Another way to make yourself feel more at home is to cook your favourite meals in your new kitchen. Although it will probably seem strange at first, and you might feel too tired from all that unpacking, it will definitely be worth it. Many people have a very strong association with food and home, so making some of your favourite dishes in your new home will really help you to feel more comfortable in your new surroundings. However you choose to make yourself feel at home, the most important element will always be time, so don’t worry if you don’t feel a strong connection to your new home right away.
