As Liverpool is becoming more and more of a centre for business, there are increasingly more opportunities for anyone wishing to become more employable, particularly young people with big dreams and a lot of motivation.
If this is you, but you have no idea how to move forward, you need to think carefully about all of your options and which opportunities are right for your path to success. What direction would you like to move your career in? What’s stopping you? It’s time to take control of your life and start making some of the big decisions in it.
Planning
There are very few activities in this world that can be done well without any form of planning, particularly not your career. Don’t just do whatever’s easiest, and don’t wait for the perfect future to just come to you; instead, you need to come up with your own plan. The first step is to think divergently about all of the possible options, and be as creative and uncritical as you can during this stage. Then you need to narrow your options by thinking convergently about what you enjoy doing, what you’re good at, and how these preferences can be applied to the options in front of you.
Education
One way of giving yourself even more options is to further your education. Wherever you are now, there’s more you could do. If you have a business degree, why not think about a masters in accounting? You could even make arrangements to study abroad at the university which offers the most relevant qualifications for the plans you’ve drawn up.
CV Development
If you’ve decided that education isn’t the route you want to take, then there are still many ways in which you could broaden your choices. Invest your time doing some research into writing a CV that will get you the job you want, but you can also get support for local services which offer information, advice and guidance.
Interview Practice
It might sound obvious, but one of the best ways to get an employment opportunity is to ask for one. Call up businesses that you can see yourself working for, and explain that you’re looking for the right job for your skillset. Many employers will appreciate the courage on your part, but if you do get interviews this way, then you need to be ready. Interview practice is one of the best ways to make yourself employable, and if you can handle interviews, then this will be a boon throughout your career. Get your family and friends to help you practice.
Plan B, C and D
Sometimes you need to keep trying to get what you want, and sometimes you need to change what it is you want, and it’s up to you to know when. It’s important to think divergently about all of your options first, because sometimes what you think is the right path for you will turn out to be the wrong route. Your approach to generating employability needs give you the confidence to try a lot of different options and to know when an option isn’t working.
