SAE Liverpool plays host to Northern Power Women

Last week, SAE Liverpool was proud to host Northern Power Women (NPW) for an afternoon of frank discussions about women in the workplace, namely in the tech sector.

NPW is a collaborative campaign to accelerate gender diversity from the North of England, hosting a number of events that include awards, talks and conferences.

In a live recording of their podcast, host Sam Walker from BBC Radio 5 Live asked questions to the panelists which consisted of Annie O’Toole from Swapbots and Michelle Partington – Invictus Games & Mental Health Advocate.

Sam Walker commented: “It was fantastic to see so many young men and women not only engaged about equality in business and life, but enthusiastic about the part they wanted to play to change attitudes.”

The event came about as a result of feedback from our NSS Open Forum, which highlighted that our students want to be more engaged with women in the industry.

“It was a fantastic event and great to see students getting involved in discussions around women working in the tech sector,” Michael Carroll, SAE Liverpool Campus Manager tells us.

“The panelists were very engaging with our students and we’ve had very positive feedback from students and external visitors.”

We asked some of our students to tell us what they thought of the event, here’s what they had to say:

Emily Turner, Film student commented:

“When Northern power women visited to do their podcast, I was surprised how much the industry varies for women and men, but despite this, it only inspired me further to strive in my chosen career path. I also liked that they delved into different careers and issues that not only apply to women but men also. After the session, I enjoyed speaking more to some of the guest speakers about their experiences and opinions.”

Morghann Linnett-Richardson, Animation student commented:

“I found the Northern Power Women podcast really informative and empowering. Knowing that I am about to enter into an industry where gender is still an issue is quite scary, but knowing that there are women in various industries fighting for equality is amazing. I liked the fact that there was a man on the panel- it gave an alternative perspective into feminism in the workplace as well as proving that men can see the issues with equality too.”

The event marks the first of many exciting collaborations between NPW and SAE Liverpool.
