Jurgen Klopp has warned that Liverpool must stop looking to make historical comparisons with their current crop of players.
Last weekend’s emphatic thrashing of Watford saw the Reds propelled to the Premier League’s summit for the first time since May 2014.
Parallels have been made with that team which went close to becoming champions as well as the club’s iconic title-winning side from 1987/88.
But Klopp insists that his side, who lead rivals Chelsea in the table by a solitary point, must be allowed to be forward-thinking about their ambitions.
He said: “It’s a really good moment and I know that everybody compares with the past, especially at Liverpool.
“Three years ago, 10, five, 25 years ago – but this team is new, we are new.
“Our story started a few months ago so you cannot compare us with anyone else.
“You cannot carry the history on our backs, we should feel free for creating something in the near future.
“If everybody wants to say ‘We wait now for 20-something years for silverware’ or whatever, we can say ‘Okay, we (have) tried, actually, only since a year’.
“So that gives us the freedom to look in the future quite optimistically.”
