Liverpool owner John Henry has appeared to suggest that fan protests over ticketing may see plans for the further expansion of Anfield shelved.
Capacity at the Reds’ stadium now exceeds 54,000 following the rebuilding of the Main Stand while an extension of the Anfield Road stand is in the planning stages.
But the issue of ticket prices has remained firmly on the agenda with supporters staging a 77th minute walk-out against Sunderland last season.
That demonstration prompted owners Fenway Sports Group to reverse their decision to raise the maximum price of match tickets to £77 per game.
And Henry has hinted that the furore around the debate may put paid to Liverpool’s plans for a full-scale refurbishment.
“I don’t know if there is a next step because ticket prices are an issue in England,” he told AP.
“That may foreclose further expansion. We’ll have to see.”
Henry also spoke about the impact of Jurgen Klopp at Anfield, hailing the former Borussia Dortmund manager as a revelation during his first year in charge.
He added: “He was a perfect fit for Liverpool, for the culture of the club, for the supporters, for the kind of team that we were trying to build.
“We couldn’t have asked for a better fit.”
