Liverpool saw out their summer with a record-breaking clear out as four players sealing their Anfield exits in the final hours of transfer deadline day.
Mario Balotelli became the club’s 13th and biggest departure in the window by joining French club Nice on a free transfer, two years after the Reds signed him for £16 million.
It had been expected that Liverpool would be forced to buy out the final 12 months of the Italy striker’s contract but no compensation was sanctioned.
Also leaving Merseyside on a permanent deal was Luis Alberto, whose £4.2 million move to Lazio was officially finalised earlier in the day.
The Spanish midfielder spent the previous two seasons on loan at Malaga and Deportivo La Coruna after failing to impress in a debut season at Anfield.
Lazar Markovic, meanwhile, is set to return to Portugal for a season-long loan with Sporting Lisbon, who had tracked the winger all summer.
Another player heading out on loan is Andre Wisdom, who has joined Austrian champions RB Salzburg for the remainder of the current campaign.
Jurgen Klopp, however, has failed in his attempts to offload centre-backs Tiago Ilori and Mamadou Sakho, with the latter rejecting three loan offers.
Yet despite the disappointment, Liverpool have managed to offload a total of 13 players – a feat only matched in 2005.
