Four Liverpool FC fans arrested amid ugly scenes at Europa League clash

Four Liverpool fans have been arrested following violent scenes during last night’s Europa League clash with Manchester United.

It is understood that fights broke out and a flare was lit towards the end of the game at Old Trafford as travelling Reds fans began to celebrate their Europa League last 16 win. A minibus window was also smashed.

 

Police in Manchester have today confirmed that four Liverpool fans and one Manchester United fan were arrested. Two were arrested on suspicion of affray following a physical confrontation after the match.

Another was arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage after the window of a minibus was smashed. All three of these men remain in custody. A fourth was arrested for letting off a flare and was given a caution.

The Manchester United fan was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly and remains in police custody.

 

It is alleged that the scuffles broke out after Liverpool fans who were sat amongst United supporters held a flag over the balcony.

Superintendent Jim Liggett, match commander for the Manchester United v Liverpool match said: “Towards the end of the game there were a handful of concerning incidents which are currently being investigated.

“We have made a total of five arrests, however the behaviour of the majority of fans in attendance was excellent and I would like to thank them for their co-operation throughout.”
