Liverpool FC reveal new third kit inspired by 2001 treble success

Liverpool have drawn inspiration from their 2001 treble-winning success for their new third kit.

The ‘toxic thunder’ strip was revealed by Adam Lallana, Simon Mignolet and James Milner during a launch at Facebook’s California headquarters overnight.

New Balance used the design of the programme cover from the Reds’ epic UEFA Cup final win over Alaves 15 years ago to form the shirt’s main pattern.

And vice-captain Milner admits he is keen on the new look.

He said: “It’s definitely an eye catching kit, and it will stand out on the pitch.

“It’s always a thrill to represent LFC and it’ll be exciting to wear these colours whilst we do that.

“The key thing for the players is that it’s comfortable and this kit is part of a great collection for next year.”

In a further nod to the calendar year that saw five major trophies head to Anfield, a quote from Gerard Houllier has been included on the inner hem.

‘Liverpool players must play like lions’, was one of the Frenchman’s more memorable quotes during his six years in the Liverpool hot seat.

A recent tradition of including the 96 emblem on the nape of the neck, in memory of those that died at Hillsborough, has been incorporated in the design.
