Merseyside Police’s former headquarters has been sold in a £17 million deal.
Canning Place was originally placed on the market in August 2024, around three years since the force had relocated to its new purpose-built home at Rose Hill.
The government’s housing and regeneration agency Home England was named as the preferred bidder for the 135,000 square feet site, which first opened in 1977.
A total of 13 bids were received for the land situated opposite the Royal Albert Dock which will now be transformed into a mixed-use residential development.
Shops, a hotel and leisure facilities are expected to be incorporated into the plans alongside an area of open space as part of the initial consultation process.
Merseyside Police and Crime Commissioner Emily Spurrell said: “Completing the sale of Canning Place is a hugely significant moment.
“The site was part of Merseyside Police’s story for more than 40 years, but it was no longer suitable for a modern, forward-looking police service.
“This sale allows us to take the right steps to reinvest a substantial amount back into our policing estate – delivering on my commitment to provide fit‑for‑purpose stations and facilities that support our officers, PCSOs and staff to do their jobs effectively and put our communities first.
“Canning Place sits in one of the most important locations on Liverpool’s iconic waterfront, and Homes England’s involvement will bring fresh energy, new opportunities and a vibrant new neighbourhood.
“This marks the start of an exciting transformation for the site and the city.”
