A man who stole £15,000 from two Liverpool schools has been banned indefinitely from teaching.
Neil Metcalf was jailed for 15 months in 2024 after pleading guilty to fraud by abuse of position in his roles as the head of the Mossley Hill-based primary schools.
The 51-year-old siphoned off funds from St Anthony of Padua RC Primary School and Our Lady’s Bishop Eton Primary School between 2016 and November 2023.
He unsuspectingly sent the money in cheques his stepson, who was instructed to transfer the cash to his personal bank account once it had cleared.
Metcalf, of Childwall, admitted he carried out what has since been described as a ‘sophisticated fraud’ scheme after racking up £100,00 in credit card debts.
Following his conviction, a Teaching Regulation Agency hearing has now imposed an indefinite ban with the option of a review after the first six years.
A report released by the body responsible for the teaching profession in England said officials recognised Metcalf’s motives were driven by his spiralling debt issues.
However the panel concluded that his representations to the TRA demonstrated only ‘chagrin’ at the personal consequence of his actions rather than to those impacted.
