Liverpool 1-1 Spurs: Three talking points

Liverpool were denied their 1,500th home league win against Tottenham.

Dominik Szoboszlai broke the deadlock inside the opening 20 minutes with a trademark free kick that nestled into the lefthand corner of The Kop’s net.

But Richarlison returned to haunt his former local rivals at the end of normal time by slotting past Brazil international teammate Alisson from close range.

Arne Slot’s side missed the chance to leapfrog Aston Villa into the Premier League’s fourth place after their relegation-threatened visitors’ late point.

Here were the key talking points from Anfield:

Slot fast running out of road

Until recently, Liverpool home games used to be the hottest ticket in town.

Seemingly only brokering a deal with the devil could secure a spot at Anfield when the hosts regularly delivered afternoons of excitement and exhilaration.

But even moderately-priced entrance to see Arne Slot’s side is now proving to be a hard sell, judging by the late availability on the eve of Tottenham’s visit.

The Dutchman should heed the growing number of supporters voting with their feet as much as the boos which greeted the Reds’ latest dropped points.

His charges have now conceded eight top flight goals in the 90th minute or later, eclipsing the previous record set in the tumultuous 2010/11 campaign.

Back then, dwindling attendances proved a regular occurrence and ultimately proved to be the undoing of Roy Hodgson’s short-lived managerial reign.

Only Liverpool’s continued involvement in the Champions League and FA Cup is now preventing Slot from suffering a similar fate to the elder statesman.

This performance coupled with the full-time reaction suggested that it is only a matter of time before the beleaguered head coach is running out of road.

4D chess gamble backfires

Slot previously took a firm stance to Liverpool fighting on multiple fronts.

Exactly 12 months ago, he fielded a strong line-up against Southampton in between their Champions League last-16 clashes with Paris Saint-Germain.

Liverpool approached the game with a 13 point lead at the Premier League’s summit, identical to their Ligue 1 counterparts who made wholesale changes.

Ahead of attempting to overturn a 1-0 aggregate against Galatasaray on Wednesday, however, Slot took a bizarre 4D chess approach to his line-up.

Ibrahima Konate, Mohamed Salah and Hugo Ekitike all started on the bench while Dominik Szoboszlai was deployed at right-back instead of Joe Gomez.

What in-game changes Slot did make were equally confusing with Curtis Jones predictably ineffectual after replacing Florian Wirtz in the No.10 role.

The introduction of Trey Nyoni in place of Cody Gakpo, similarly, was a head-scratcher with Alexis Mac Allister clearly a more befitting candidate.

Given the marked shift in the landscape since PSG rocked up on Merseyside last March, Slot would likely argue the importance of horses for courses.

Yet his curious choices spectacularly backfired and could prove costly if Liverpool fail to secure a return to Europe’s elite competition next season.

Rio shines amid darkness

Rio Ngumoha is one of the few Liverpool players that will increasingly be able to look back on this miserable campaign with any semblance of fondness.

Since the first knocking of pre-season, the teenager has captured Kopite hearts and minds and has enjoyed a few scrapbook moments along the way.

Another was added to the collection with a first Premier League start against Spurs which only served to underscore his obvious and burgeoning talent.

Rawness was still evident at times but as has been the case in his previous appearances, the 17-year-old was a constant threat in the attacking third.

His link-up play with Wirtz offers hopes that Liverpool may have unearthed another potentially lethal creative partnership to unlock opposing defences.

Ngumoha also became the youngest Premier League player to complete seven dribbles in a single match since records began in the 2006/07 season.

The £2.8 million tribunal fee set to be paid to Chelsea after a tribunal ruling increasingly resembles small change as he goes from strength to strength.

On an afternoon permeated by darkness, Ngumoha was a true shining light.
