Dominik Szoboszlai has revealed there is no decision on his Liverpool future.
The Hungary international’s standing at Anfield has grown despite Arne Slot’s side enduring an alarmingly poor defence as the reigning Premier League champions.
Despite Szoboszlai’s current contract with the Reds expiring in 2028, there is a desire behind the scenes to reflect his importance with an improved long-term deal.
But while the 25-year-old insists he remains happy on Merseyside, he is yet to see negotiations reach a fruitful conclusion in extending his stay with the club.
“There is always progress [in talks] but not decision has been made,” said Szoboszlai.
“I’ll just keep on going every week, every training, giving my best for the team, for the fans. Let’s see what is going to happen in the future.
“You guys in the media make a lot for the people [public] and you keep on going because that’s your job.
“There has been talks but for sure not any decision has been made.
“Of course I am happy here but you know how football works and that is something everybody has to take into account.”
Szoboszlai heads into Wednesday’s Champions League encounter at Marseille after suffering his worst week in a red shirt due to two major on-field blunders.
He gifted Barnsley a lifeline with a haphazard backheel in the FA Cup before blasting a penalty kick against the crossbar in the ensuing 1-1 draw with Burnley.
Tykes manager Conor Hourihane accused the midfielder of being ‘disrespectful’ with his attempted dummy and would not have tried it against a bigger opponent.
However Szoboszlai insists that his approach remains the same regardless of who Liverpool are facing and that he will not be deterred by the ensuing spot-kick miss.
He added: “For me, personally, it was a tough week.
“I made a mistake against Barnsley but I have to make it clear it wasn’t disrespectful in my opinion.
“I would do the same against Arsenal, City and against Chelsea as well. I didn’t want to give it back to Giorgi [Mamardashvili].
“I wanted to keep going but I tried to pretend that was playing it back just to make it clear.
“On Saturday I missed a penalty but I’m going to keep on going, I’m going to take the next one and I’m going to score I’m pretty sure.
“You have to forget it, that’s the best, but of course you have to have learned from it.
“To be honest if you see me after every session I cannot practise more – and I’m not allowed to practise more because I’m practising as much as I can.
“I will keep on practising and if I have another chance I will take it.”
Szoboszlai took on penalty duties in place of Mohamed Salah, who guided Egypt to the Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals before losing Saturday’s third place play-off.
The forward missed seven games for Liverpool while on international duty but could be back in contention later this week despite parting on fractious terms last month.
Asked if he had spoken to Salah during the tournament, Szoboszlai replied: “Yes, to be honest almost every day. We speak about everything.
“I’m following him, I guess he is following me. We talk a lot.
“He will come back and then we just keep on going. He will be here and it’s the decision and the manager and the club.
“It is not about us, it is about him.”
