Liverpool FC set to turn down EFL Trophy invite

Liverpool will decline the chance to compete in next season’s EFL Trophy.

The competition is set to be opened up to include teams from Premier League academies and the Reds were among a host of top-flight clubs invited to participate.

But BBC Sport claim that Anfield officials are set to join the likes of Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea in passing up the opportunity.

Also refusing to play in the tournament traditionally restricted to Football League sides are Tottenham and Manchester United.

“The EFL is currently awaiting responses from a number of clubs that have been invited to take part in this season’s EFL Trophy,” said a spokesman.

“Already a number of clubs have accepted our invitation.

“In any instances where clubs do decline, we will issue invitations to other clubs with category one academies in the order in which they finished in the 2015/16 domestic league tables.”
