Liverpool FC’s Mamadou Sakho faces fresh twist in doping scandal

Mamadou Sakho’s attempt to clear his name from a failed drugs test remains far from over.

The Liverpool defender was absolved by UEFA last week after testing positive for a banned substance in the wake of March’s last 16 Europa League win over Manchester United.

Sakho missed the Reds’ final eight games of the season, including the Europa League final, due to a provisional 30-day suspension imposed which also saw him miss out on Euro 2016.

But the World Anti Doping Agency have refused to rule out contesting the decision by European football’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body to drop the case.

A debate as to whether higenamine, the alleged ‘fat burner’ which saw Sakho fail his test, should remain on WADA’s list of prohibited substances continues to rumble on.

The anti-doping body allowed the France international’s sample to be tested in a Cologne laboratory which saw him originally cleared of any wrongdoing.

However the Daily Telegraph claim that WADA later confirmed that the use of higenamine remains prohibited.

A WADA spokesman said: “We are awaiting the reasoned decision as it relates to this one.”
