Liverpool City Region to receive transport boost

Transport in the Liverpool City Region is set to receive a multi-billion boost.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves confirmed on Wednesday that the combined authority will be allocated £1.6 billion in funding during its next five-year settlement allocation.

The money will be utilised for three new Merseyrail stations in addition to improving transport links to Liverpool John Lennon Airport, Anfield and Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Ms Reeves made the announcement in Rochdale as part of a wider £15.6 billion investment in public transport projects across the North of England and Midlands.

She said : “Investment in the Liverpool City Region, backing the mayor Steve Rotheram to deliver three new rapid bus routes, linking up the city centre, John Lennon Airport, Anfield, the new Everton stadium on Bramley-Moore Dock and new homes built on the Central Docks redevelopment alongside the largest ever investment in Merseyside railway stations to serve Halton (Cheshire), St Helens and Woodchurch.”

Mayor Rotherham described the news as a ‘really big win’ for the region.
