Liverpool are reportedly pursuing a move for River Plate defender Gabriel Mercado.
Mercado emerged as a target for Jurgen Klopp as he looks to strengthen his side’s defence and appeared before the Reds boss during Argentina’s Copa America win over Bolivia.
And should Fernando Martino’s side win this summer’s tournament in the United States, River president Rodolfo D’Onofrio believes that a move to Anfield could be in the offing for the 29-year-old.
“Klopp likes him. But for Mercado to go to England, Argentina need to be champions,” he told Fox Sports.
“Winning a title with the national team would allow him to play in England.
“If he had the passport it would be different, but being champion he will have the possibility.”
