A fire broke out inside the former Ofiveone nightclub in Liverpool city centre.
Police closed Brownlow Hill and Mount Pleasant while crews from four fire engines attempted to tackle the blaze at the site near the Adelphi Hotel.
Access to the nearby Mount Pleasant car park was also cordoned off following the incident, which began in a ground floor stairwell of the building.
Neighbours and local businesses were advised to close windows and doors due to thick black smoke billowing from a missing window panel on the top floor.
It is the second time in 12 months that a fire has broken out on the site nightclub, with over 60 firefighters tackling a ‘large scale’ fire’ last October.
A man was arrested on suspicion of arson at the time but later released under investigation following the early-morning blaze on the premises.
Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service confirmed on Tuesday afternoon that there were no signs of fire spread during a full search of the building.
