Liverpool confirm fourth COVID-19 test casualty

Thiago Alcantara has become Liverpool’s fourth player to be sidelined by Covid.

The Spain international joins Virgil van Dijk, Fabinho and Curtis Jones in being ruled out after returning a positive coronavirus tests in the past week alone.

All three players were forced to miss the Reds’ comfortable 3-1 victory over Newcastle United on Thursday pending the outcome of their PCR results.

However the trio have now been joined by Thiago, who previously contracted Covid last year just weeks since his arrival at Anfield from Bayern Munich.

The 30-year-old is isolating and will miss Sunday’s clash with Tottenham Hotspur, with Jordan Henderson also absent through by a non-Covid illness.

Jurgen Klopp admitted after the Newcastle win that his side were braced for more players to be struck down as Premier League clubs undergo daily testing.

Speaking ahead of the game with Antonio Conte’s side, the German conceded that further positive tests may prevent his side fulfilling their latest fixtures.

“I am happy to play but the situation is really strange,” Klopp told Sky Sports.

“You prepare your team but have no idea. We did lateral flow tests this morning and they were all fine. I think we have to fight through this.

“But next week, if we lose another player and another player, and then it is not possible. No-one can just push through these things.”
