Liverpool midfielder James Milner is eager to play his part in updating the club’s trophy wall at Melwood, ahead of Wednesday’s Europa League final.
The Reds take on Sevilla in Basel in tomorrow’s night’s final, and a win would secure the Anfield side’s ninth European title, an enduring legacy that the England international wants to be a part of.
He said: “Ultimately it’s about winning trophies.”
“We’d like nothing better than to have someone in the Melwood reception over the summer changing the number of trophies won up on the wall.”
Milner, who will captain the team tomorrow if Jordan Henderson is ruled out, has played a key role in the club’s march to the final, and he is keen for all of that hard work to pay off in the final.
“It (the final) does seem a long way off when you’re playing on frozen pitches in the group stages, like we have done, and getting through the group.”
“But if we can finish the job, then it’s an incredible tournament to win- the glory of winning a title, but also the chance of playing in the Champions League”, added Milner.
In a season where inconsistency has hindered Liverpool domestically, their performances in Europe have been the opposite- harnessing the power of the Anfield crowd to full effect.
The comeback against Dortmund at Anfield last month was ranked as one of the greatest European nights at Anfield, and Milner stated that he hopes that performance can inspire the team in Basel.
“I thought it was a great performance and it would be a shame to waste that night against Dortmund by not going on and winning the trophy.”
