Kelleher set to start against Arsenal

Caoimhin Kelleher is set to start in Liverpool’s Carabao Cup clash with Arsenal.

Kelleher impressed with a clean sheet during his senior debut for the European champions in their third round victory against MK Dons last month.

The Republic of Ireland under-21 international remains the Reds’ third-choice goalkeeper behind Alisson Becker and Adrian in the pecking order.

But assistant manager Pep Lijnders explained why Kelleher, 20, has been given the responsibility for Wednesday’s tie with Unai Emery’s side at Anfield.

He said: “For me, consistency is the most important thing if you want to give players opportunities.

“We have Ali as our No.1, more than a No.1, and Adrian did an unbelievable job for us. There is always space at Liverpool FC for passionate ones, and he is very passionate in his training.

“But he has to do the job when Ali is not there. Caoimhin started this competition, and he is the one who will start tomorrow.

“He is a goalkeeper who on the line is excellent, like everybody saw. But his calmness to play out, to find a free player, for his age he is very stable.

“That’s what we like about him. We see a good future for him and you need these opportunities to grow. That’s why we give them to him.”
