Liverpool take eight-point lead in title race

Liverpool have moved eight points clear in the Premier League title race.

Jurgen Klopp’s side maintained a 100 per cent start to the new season with a late 2-1 win over Leicester City and former Reds boss Brendan Rodgers on Saturday.

But the European champions’ lead has been further consolidated by closest challengers Manchester City suffering a shock home defeat to Wolves.

Two second-half goals from Adama Traore at the Etihad Stadium gave the Wanderers their first victory against City on their travels since 1984.

It means that Liverpool head into the upcoming international break in a commading position in their battle to overhaul the reigning champions.

City manager Pep Guardiola, however, believes that his side can still catch the current leaders, who blew a seven-point advantage in five weeks last season.

He said: “The distance is big, I know that.

“For many circumstances, they [Liverpool] didn’t drop points. It is better not to think one team is eight points ahead. It is only October.

“It is a lot of points [difference]. But it is better not to think about that. It is better to think about what is next.”
