Liverpool eye seventh Southampton signing

Liverpool are eyeing Southampton’s Alex McCarthy to replace Simon Mignolet.

Mignolet is expected to leave Anfield this summer in search of regular first-team football after falling out of favour as first-choice goalkeeper to Alisson Becker.

In his place, Jurgen Klopp has identified Saints stopper McCarthy as his preferred choice to take the Belgium international’s place as experienced cover for Alisson.

The 31-year-old’s first-team prospects at St Mary’s have diminished following Ralph Hasenhuttl’s arrival with Angus Gunn preferred between the sticks.

McCarthy was named as Southampton’s player of the year in the 2017/18 season but is expected to be on the move with several Premier League clubs interested.

Among them is understood to be Liverpool, who previously tracked the veteran goalkeeper at Crystal Palace before making a 2016 move to the South Coast.

If a deal can be agreed, McCarthy would become the seventh player to move to Anfield from Southampton since 2014, joining the likes of Sadio Mane and Virgil van Dijk.

Liverpool are expected to demand in the region of £15 million to secure Mignolet’s departure after almost six years at the club.
