Werner: Liverpool will come back stronger

Tom Werner has vowed that Liverpool will come back stronger next season.

Sunday’s final day win over Wolves capped off a remarkable Premier League campaign in which the Reds finished runners-up with 97 points.

Manchester City pipped Jurgen Klopp’s side to the title by a solitary point, sending Anfield’s domestic drought ticking over into a full 30th year.

But Liverpool chairman Werner believes the current shortfall will make them doubly determined to go one better in their efforts to overhaul the champions.

He said: “It was a magical season. Obviously we’re disappointed that we didn’t win the league but it was a remarkable season and the squad is exciting.

“I think that we’ve made a lot of friends around the world and we’ve done well by our supporters. I can’t say enough about Jurgen and all the talent on the field.

“We’re only going to get stronger. Ninety-seven points is a remarkable year.

“We obviously didn’t win the league but we’ll be back next year and we’ve got a lot of motivation to win the league next year and I’m excited.”

Werner also paid tribute to the Anfield support following a memorable week in which Liverpool also booked their place in next month’s Champions League final.

“The support was extraordinary,” he added.

“As Jurgen said, between the support on Tuesday and the way the team played, it was one of the great matches at Anfield.

“I look forward to a great match in Madrid.”
