Virgil van Dijk could still return against Leicester

Jurgen Klopp has revealed Virgil van Dijk could still feature against Leicester City.

Van Dijk appeared a doubt for the encounter with Claude Puel’s side after falling ill during Liverpool’s warm weather training break in Dubai last week.

But hopes of the Reds defender being in contention to face the Foxes have been boosted by news that he was able to complete a first training session on Monday.

Klopp is also confident of having Gini Wijnaldum and Fabinho available with the midfield duo recovering from knocks picked up against Brighton and Crystal Palace respectively.

He said: “Virg was a little bit ill, but he trained yesterday and will train today, so we will see.

“Dejan (Lovren) is fine, Gini trained, Fabinho will train today.

“Trent (Alexander-Arnold) is getting closer and closer and it all looks very positive, but he will not be ready for tomorrow.”

Looking ahead to Leicester’s visit on Wednesday, the Liverpool manager remains under no illusions about the threat posed by ex-England striker Jamie Vardy.

Vardy continues to enjoy an impressive record against the Anfield club with seven goals in eight previous Premier League outings between the sides.

“He is a fantastic striker but we have made it easy for him,” added Klopp.

“Didn’t Lucas Leiva give him an assist (in 2016)? Even I’d have scored that goal.

“He’s more involved in defending than in the past. He is a massive threat but not the only one. Maddison, Gray, Pereira, Albrighton…

“Jamie’s best one against us was the one at Leicester the year they were champions. He’s a fantastic player.”
